Dog Walk Life
Walkability in Hillhurst
Hillhurst is one of the more walkable inner-city neighbourhoods in Calgary, though its terrain is slightly more varied than flat-grid neighbourhoods like Kensington — the bluff creates some elevation change on north-south streets. That's generally a feature for dog owners who want to build conditioning. The Bow River pathway access is within a 5-minute walk for virtually every Hillhurst address, and the Kensington commercial strip is equally close in the opposite direction. Dogs here tend to be well-exercised by default.
Hillhurst's bluff-adjacent streets can feel windier than sheltered inner-city neighbourhoods during winter — the Crescent Road NW viewpoint is exposed and the bluff pathway can drift significantly after heavy snow. McHugh Bluff off-leash area typically stays accessible through winter, though footing is variable. Spring brings fast-melting snow from chinooks, which can make the bluff-side slopes muddy but clears the pathways quickly. Summer mornings on the Bow River pathway are some of the best dog-walking conditions in the city.
