Altadore borders Marda Loop's commercial heart on 33rd Ave SW — the same patios, dog-friendly cafés, and pet supply shops are as accessible to Altadore owners as they are to Marda Loop residents. A natural extension of the neighbourhood's dog-walking circuit in summer.
The Elbow River pathway runs through Altadore's eastern edge, connecting north to Sandy Beach, River Park, and further toward downtown. The pathway is leashed on the paved sections, with clear transitions to off-leash areas at designated points. A reliable all-season walking route regardless of weather.
Just across the Altadore-Marda Loop boundary on 33rd Ave SW, Tail Blazers is a holistic pet food and supply shop staffed by knowledgeable people. Dogs are welcome inside. Most Altadore dog owners treat this as their primary pet supply destination.
The pathway system around the Glenmore Reservoir is accessible from Altadore's southern edge and offers a longer leashed walking circuit — 15+ km around the full reservoir. Not off-leash, but one of the more scenic longer walks in SW Calgary for owners who want distance without driving.
Altadore is highly walkable for dog owners by Calgary standards, though the layout is more spread out than Kensington or Marda Loop. The neighbourhood's direct access to Sandy Beach and River Park off-leash areas means most Altadore dogs get meaningful off-leash time within a short walk or bike ride. The Elbow River pathway running through the eastern edge provides a natural daily walking circuit regardless of weather, and the Marda Loop commercial strip is close enough that supply runs and patio stops are practical on foot.
Altadore's river-adjacent parks are at their best in late spring and summer — Sandy Beach is particularly popular from May through September when the Elbow River is at the right level for swimming. Spring runoff can close Sandy Beach and Elbow River access temporarily in May; check City of Calgary park closures before making the trip. Winter is manageable: the Elbow River pathway is maintained, and the off-leash fields at River Park stay accessible. The Glenmore Reservoir pathway is exposed to wind in winter but offers reliable footing when maintained.
From Altadore, head north on 20 St SW or 14 St SW to 16 Ave SW, then turn east. PAWS is at 1313 16 Ave SW — about 10 minutes with normal traffic. Street parking is available directly in front. Drop-off is 7–10 AM, pickup is 3:30–7 PM.
